Over 1300 say ‘thank you’ as FCC launch Recognition

FCC Environment, one of the UK’s leading waste and resource management companies has launched a new Recognition platform to around 2,400 staff across 200 different sites.

      Increase employee engagement
With a broad range of occupations from manual roles in recycling facilities to health and safety practitioners and energy specialists, FCC already offer a comprehensive reward package. However, with a strong people focus and commitments to make FCC a great place to work, develop a highly skilled and motivated workforce and ensure employees are valued, they have introduced a new Recognition platform to help increase employee engagement even further.

      Reduce admin burden
FCC already use the You at Work platform as their benefits portal called FCC Extra - giving you more, every day.  This includes online total reward statements and payslips, a range of flexible benefits, access to a money advice service and online discounts.  By taking advantage of the additional Recognition module, and bringing everything online, they have been able to alleviate some of the admin burden and offer both formal and social recognition from the same platform.

Naomi Nightingale-Okere, Internal Comms Coordinator says, “Since implementing this new recognition platform we have had a lot of positive feedback, it seems everyone has taken to it very well and we have found it really bridges the gap between the formal recognition scheme we have in place which is for extraordinary achievements.“

      Public pat on the back
Using online, social, peer to peer recognitions, employees can add pictures to their profile page and then give a personal public pat on the back to their colleagues using the categories specifically tailored for FCC including: Helping Hands; Great Teamwork; Good Job and Great Ideas. Team members can also be copied in to make them aware of their colleague’s good work.  Employees need never miss out on a nomination, as they can view all of the recognitions being made in a continual social media type feed on the home page, which can be filtered so they only get to see the people relevant to them.

      Discretional Perks
Perks are then given to employees off the back of the nominations at the manager’s discretion with a simple approval process sitting behind it. The perks that employees can look forward to, which can change on a regular basis, include: Chocolate On Us – where a chocolate box is sent to an employee; Coffee On Us – where employees get a gift card for a coffee at Costa or Starbucks; Mystery Gifts and a £10 One4All Gift Card.

“Having the ability to alter the perks we give out really helps to keep it fresh”, Naomi continues, “And as an admin of the platform I find it really easy to manage and fulfil all of the perks.”

FCC have small units in their organisation so have also been able to make awards for teams as well as individuals. Employees can also make formal nominations online for extraordinary achievements, called ABCD awards, and rewards are given out quarterly throughout the year.

      Encouraging managers to take part
The reporting functionality enables FCC to keep an eye on how many recognitions are being made and how many perks are given against them.  As FCC are keen to encourage managers to make recognitions and ensure they fulfil on their people commitments, an automated email is being created to remind a manager to ‘recognise’ someone if they haven’t logged in for a week.

      Socially successful
FCC employees have made over 1300 social recognitions to their colleagues so far, and Naomi says, “Small thank-you’s and little gestures like this really go a long way with our staff and it is important to us to make them feel valued and for them to know that great work will not go unnoticed.”
